You know how when you purchase a certain car, you suddenly notice the same make and model everywhere? Well, since I started noticing bees, I see bees everywhere, even where they are not. Take this Black Soldier Fly, Hermetia illucens. I spent a good half-hour on Bugguide.net looking at wasps (bee cousins) before I slapped my forehead. It’s a fly. Duh, Kinzie. Notice the big fly eyes and the weird antennae.
After that realization, identification came speedily, along with the knowledge that Black Soldier Fly larvae eat animal waste and decaying organic matter. Gag. (It must have flown in from a neighbor’s yard.)
